Network Ireland Cork – Get published in 2026 – January 7th 2026

What a great evening! Network Cork is a truly fantastic organisation – the evening was incoming President Diane Higgins inaugural event and what a start to the year! Huge thanks to Diane for inviting me, and to MC Stephen Ryan for the great questions, I was delighted to be part of such a prestigious panel.

Get Published in 2026 brought together a diverse panel (Kate Ryan, Sam Blake, Nadine Hughes Campbell and Dr Julia Skinner) to help explore opportunities across print, digital, and other publishing platforms. Whether starting your first writing project or ready to grow your audience, this event offered practical tips, encouragement, and clear pathways to publishing success. The evening was packed with wonderfully inspiring and practical insights with real-world guidance from both authors and industry professionals who understand the many paths to publishing.

Launch of the Brave New World Report – February 10th 2026 – Westminster

Yesterday, the five co-author organisations of a Brave New World? Justice for Creators in the Age of AI hosted a Parliamentary event in Westminster Hall for the launch of this ground-breaking report about the impact of Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) on creators.

It is a landmark paper drawing together data from 10,000 creators, and makes stark but essential reading. With 118 citations it is a seminal document authored by Dr Rachel Drury together with Deborah Annetts and Ed Phelan It’s been brilliantly designed to be easily accessible, punchy and digestible, taking real people case studies to show what Gen AI really means.

Creativity and the business eco system that rests on creators is at serious risk too, unless AI is regulated. Next time you put up a reel on Instagram and look for ‘funny music’, the top result was composed by Thomas. It’s been used in 32 million You Tube shorts alone, has been played billions of times – does he get paid for every play? Guess.

If creators cannot get paid to create, they will need private wealth or financial support from elsewhere to do so – we’ll slip back 300 years to a world of patronage and only those ‘haves’ will be able to work in the creative sector.

And entire ecosystems that rest on creative output will be at risk – in my world: publishers, bookshops, libraries. In people terms this means cover designers, editors, sales teams, bookshop owners and workers, librararians – and so many more. Regulation of generative AI impacts us all.

The report calls for a CLEAR framework:
C: Consent first
L: Licensing not scraping
E: Ethical use of training data
A: Accountability & transparency
R: Remuneration and rights

The structures are in place to enable this, we need government to make it happen.

If you’re not a member of a union in your creative field, please join one. We need to stand together.

From The Society of Authors: This major new study has been published in partnership with other creator-led organisations. In the report, we call on the government to immediately implement a new regulatory framework to protect the livelihoods of authors and other creators against AI, or risk the decimation of the UK’s £124.6 billion creative industries sector.

The findings are stark, showing creators losing income and jobs and having their work stolen across every creative discipline. Key findings include:
– 99% of creators say their work has been scraped without consent
– One in three creative jobs already lost to GenAI
– A third 32% of illustrators report lost commissions or cancelled projects due to GenAI

Authors are also hard hit:

– 86% of authors say GenAI has already reduced their earnings
– 72% of authors say job opportunities have already been cut
– 57% of authors say their career is no longer sustainable
– 43% of literary translators and 37% of SoA illustrators saw earnings fall due to GenAI
– 26% of illustrators and 36% of literary translators report cancelled or redirected commissions

The Society of Authors’ 2025 Translation Prizes February 10th 2026 – The British Library
Social media asset depicting the stack of books for The Society of Authors Translation Prizes

Last night was a wonderful celebration at The British Library highlighting the importance of translation.

The Society of Authors have shone the spotlight on the often “invisible” creativity of translators, announcing the winners of its 2025 Translation Prizes.

Nine literary translators and one editor were named winners at the event at the British Library, with more than £32,000 in prize money shared among the winners and runners-up. The prizes celebrated outstanding translations of prose, poetry and non-fiction, from languages from around the globe and across a range of genres.

Fiona Sze-Lorrain, the host for the evening and judge for one of the prizes, said: “I never cease to marvel at how works of translation, like dripping water hollowing out a rock, transform cultural/literary boundaries and our receptivity to the ‘other’ on the most human level.

“And for these reasons among others, I’m so pleased to be able to contribute to this collective effort in highlighting the vital import of translated literature, celebrating their oft invisible yet frontline creators—the translators.”

All the shortlisted books from the 2025 Translation Prizes are available to purchase via Bookshop.org here. A percentage of all book sales will be donated to the SoA Access Fund.
